Went to Germany in July and August 2012!
What a Memorable Experience!
Co-sponsored by the The Rockville Sister City Corporation, City of Rockville Department of Recreation and Parks, The Rockville Recreation and Parks Foundation, The Rockville Rotary Club Foundation, The Xerox Corporation, The Finest Performance Foundation, and many other contributors (see our DONORS page), these 2 talented ensembles traveled to and performed in Pinneberg, Hamburg, and Berlin as "cultural ambassadors." The tour lasted 2 weeks and the people of Germany were warm and inviting.
Pinneberg is a "Sister City" to Rockville, Maryland, and the German Sister City Group laid out the red carpet to us! Host families opened their homes to receive 20 Finest performers and family members. All of us were treated as though we were "family" and the itinerary was exciting and varied. From arrival to departure, our host families were gracious and made us feel very welcome. Activities included a bicycle tour, boat tour, tours of Pinneberg, Hamburg and Berlin, high ropes course adventure, cook-outs and dinners in our honor.
Soon after our arrival, the Mayor of Pinneberg invited us to the City Hall for refreshments and a private, "personal" welcome prior to our first performance. A particularly memorable activity was in Hamburg. It was the trip to experience "Dialogue in the Dark." All of us felt that this activity gave us each a better understanding of what our blind and visually challenged fellow human beings face in life. We will also cherish the joint rehearsals and performances with the Leseberg Dance Academy which co-hosted our German visit. Many of the talented young dancers and their families were host families to us, and they were wonderfully hospitable. We learned so much and the cultural exchange we shared is a once in a lifetime remembrance.
Summer 2013 promises to be an opportunity for us to host 18 members of Tanzschule Leseberg as they visit the U.S. American families will host the dancers for two weeks. Itinerary excursions will include tours of the Washington DC area and New York City. Interested in being a host family? Or just being a part of what we do? Contact us.
